Mhe AC: Tunakukumbuka

Nation mourns Amina Chifupa

President Jakaya Kikwete has described legislator Amina Chifupa (26), who died in a Dar es Salaam hospital on Tuesday night, as a fearless girl who staunchly stood for the truth.

In his condolence message to National Assembly Speaker Samwel Sitta, the President said Amina died at a time when her presence in the House had started to be felt in earnest and her political star started to sparkle.

Amina died at the Lugalo Military Hospital, where she was admitted some five days earlier. Doctors said she was down with malaria and diabetes.

`I have received news of Amina`s death with sadness because she has died at a time we did not expect such a calamity to befall us,` the President said in the message, saying the young MP was `like a flower that shone at sunrise but died out shortly before sunset`.

`Many of us will remember Amina for her contribution to debate in Parliament and elsewhere in society, notably among the youth. She was strong, creative and always ready to stand for the welfare of the youth and the nation at large,` noted President Kikwete.

He said the MP was always unwavering and courageous when addressing issues she strongly believed were genuine and had a bearing on the people?s welfare, adding that her death came as a shock to her relatives and the nation in its entirety.

`On behalf of my family, the government and the ruling CCM, I send this condolence message to the National Assembly Speaker Samwel Sitta so that he can convey it to the parents of the late Amina and all Members of Parliament,` observed the President.

`I join Amina`s family in mourning her death, assuring them that they are not alone in this hour of great need. Let us pray for her soul to rest in peace,` he noted further.

A number of opposition parties have, meanwhile, also sent condolence messages to the fallen MP?s family.

Civic United Front Secretary General Seif Shariff Hamad said they had received the sad news on the death with profound sadness.

He said Amina was one of the young MPs who truly fought for the welfare of the Tanzanian society, adding: `We have lost a devoted leader.`

The message was addressed to CCM Chairman Jakaya Kikwete, National Assembly Speaker Sitta, all MPs and the bereaved family.

Chadema (Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo) Youth Director John Mnyika said they were in deep shock following Amina?s death.

`We Chadema youths join you in mourning the death of the young MP, whose outstanding ideas in the national Assembly have contributed a lot in defending the interests of the youth of Tanzania,` he said, also extending the condolences to the late Amina`s lone child, Rahman.

In another show of solidarity, the Zanzibar House of Representative described Amina as a dedicated and strong leader.

`We have lost a strong and dedicated leader who was ready to work in the interests of our nation,` House Speaker Pandu Ameir Kificho said in his message of condolence.

He said Amina contributed immensely to `the wealth of our nation` and she would be fondly remembered for that.

Isles Tourism, Trade and Investment minister Samia Suluhu Hassan called on the CCM Youth wing to fittingly honour Amina `for her demonstrable dedication and patriotism`.

For her part, Isles Health and Social Welfare deputy minister Shawana Buheti said the government should write a book on the work done by the late Amina ? `in particular in the war against drug abuse and trafficking`.

Mkwajuni Representative Ali Haji Ali said he knew Amina as a selfless MP who volunteered to fight against drug trafficking while aware of the risks involved.

`She was a transparent and critical thinker always ready to fight evil without any fear,` noted Salmin Amour, once Regional Administration and Local Government minister in the Zanzibar government.

In her remarks, Special Seats Representative Zahara Ali Hamad (CUF) said the death had robbed Tanzania of a fully dedicated leader who during her short tenure in the public service did a lot for the nation.

`Most of the legislators fear to speak the truth, particularly when it comes to drug abuse and trafficking, but Amina feared nobody. The government should honour her by making sure that it fights drug trafficking even more vigorously` he noted.

Amina was born on May 20, 1981 and attended primary school in Mwanza. Upon passing the Standard Seven national examination, she joined Kisutu Secondary School in Dar es Salaam in 1994.

She completed her O`Level education in 1998 and joined Tambaza Secondary School for her A`Level. She later moved to Makongo Secondary School, where she completed Form Six in 2001.

Soon after that, she worked with the Dar es Salaam-based Radio Clouds FM as a broadcaster. She held the post until she ventured into politics in 2005 through the CCM youth wing.

Until her death, she was enrolled at the Open University of Tanzania for a Bachelor`s degree in Political Science.
