Ladies' Detective Starts (1/6)

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

BBC One, March 15, 2009, 9pm.

The ultimate in feelgood Sunday night television returns for a six-part series. Adapted from Alexander McCall Smith’s bestselling novels and filmed entirely on location in Botswana, it is bursting with warmth, colour and rosy optimism.

The “fat and fabulous” Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott) takes on three new cases at her detective agency – a missing dog, a missing husband, and a Nigerian dentist who looks after his patients one day and tortures them the next.

She is still being bossed around by her hyper-efficient and highly strung secretary (Anika Noni Rose), and now the cheerful assortment of hangers-on – kindly car mechanics, comical hairdressers and the like – are joined by an endearing little boy, which ups the cute quota still further.

This is a series determined to present a jolly view of Africa and send you to bed basking in a warm, sunny glow.

I watched the show last night and wasn't disappointed at all. As I predicted, there were many new characters including Mma Maktsi's old friend and classmate who got a mere 40% in the exam but have got better job than Mma Makutsi who scored a record 97% in the Botswana's sectretarial college final Exam!

Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi with her ailing boyfriend(?), JLB Matekoni and BK were all fantastic!!

I can't wait to see the remaining 5 episodes!

Do not forget to switch to BBC Radio 7 - soon after the dramma (at 22:00 GMT) to listend to Ladies' Detective Favourite Radio Show - a 20 minute program.
